Details

A classic, rugged matte finish complete with protection, durability, performance and comfort.

All the design features and proven performance of the popular Cairns 1010 traditional Cairns helmet on which it was based. But the Cairns 1044 sports a rugged matte finish that echoes the quiet confidence of experience. Like the glossy 1010, the newer 1044 offers the proven protection and exceptional durability of Cairns’ DuraGlass fiberglass composite shell. The through-color composite resists chipping and cracking. And because its matte finish isn’t painted, everyday nicks and scratches are harder to see.

  • Tough, through color, DuraGlas® fiberglass and high-temp resin composite resists cracking and chipping
  • Perfect combination of durability and performance in a lightweight design
  • Three-position, rear-ratchet height adjustment ensures a secure and comfortable fit
  • Six-way overhead strap suspension system reduces shock transmission at the top of the helmet while providing a snug, comfortable fit
  • NFPA-1971-2018 Compliant

Lower profile. Superior balance. Cairns fire helmets have some of the lowest ride-heights in the market. Compare the crown clearance of the Cairns 1044 (or 1010), with its advanced thermal impact cap, to other traditional helmets. The distance from the inside of the Cairns 1044 shell to the suspension straps is less than 2-1/2 inches. Most competitive helmets, even those without an impact cap, are actually taller at more than 2-3/4 inches high. The difference in balance and wear-ability are readily apparent, especially when worn for long periods under the stressful conditions they’re designed for. You can count on these classic, traditional helmets to look good, stay comfortable, and perform dependably—providing the protection you need—for many years of hard use.

MSA's exclusive Defender Visor— Never lose or misplace your eye protection again. There’s no other NFPA compliant helmet eyewear as compact or as convenient. The MSA Defender Visor actually retracts into the helmet’s shell where it stays clean and instantly ready to deploy. Cairns’ unique design allows the visor to be raised and lowered in an instant, even with gloved hands. And don't be concerned about it slipping; the Defender stays securely stowed until YOU pull it down. It’s optically correct lens eliminates peripheral distortion. Its sleek, close-fitting profile leaves nothing sticking out or hanging off the helmet to get caught on something in zero-visibility conditions or throw the helmet off balance. And maintenance is simple. The visor can be quickly disconnected from the helmet without tools, allowing fast lens changes, even during field use.  Prepare for maximum efficiency.

A sleek, low-profile, NFPA-compliant goggle designed to fit comfortably over most prescription glasses. The high-temperature frame allows fast lens replacement. Patented Speed Clips make strap adjustments easy, even with gloves on. The snap-on/snap-off mounting system consists of simple low-profile posts on the sides of the helmet. Goggles can be used alone or with a faceshield. They can be stored on the front or back of the helmet, or quickly removed, as desired.

Bourke Eye Shield. Traditional styling with these clear bourke eyeshields.  Bourke eyeshields exceed US-OSHA (CFR 1910) NBSIR-1977.

Note: Images shown are the old bourkes. NEW NFPA bourkes will ship on helmets ordered with bourkes.

4”  Tuffshield® Visor. Although it costs you no more than the clear and smoke visor options, we at TheFireStore.com believe the Tuffshield visor offers distinct advantages. We supply it as the standard equipment visor on all Cairns Traditional and Deluxe Configuration helmets for some very good reasons:  Tuffshield is significantly more heat resistant. The Tuffshield Defender visor is heat-resistant up to 500° F. Other visor materials will start to melt at about 345° Tuffshield is a heavier grade material with more impact resistance. As the name implies, it’s just tougher.

The slight yellowish tint helps you see better, day or night. Like a pair of amber shooting glasses, they filter out harsh wavelengths and glare, improving contrast and revealing more detail under all lighting conditions—including looking at flames.  4” amber Tuffshield visor is compliant with NFPA 1971, 2013 edition. All visors meet ANSI Z87.1+ impact requirements.

Bourkes Cracked

by

The Bourkes seem nice yet they were cracked on the inside of the plastic. I think this is an issue with the manufacturer not the seller.

Cairns 1044 Helmet Review

by

Great workmanship. Very affordable.

defected helmet

by

Bought this helmet and had to drive 364 miles to return it due to poor construction of the ratchet strap being bent and twisted. They offered to send a new helmet but I needed it sooner than I would recieve it. They will not give a discount on my next purchase

Awesome Helmet!

by

Amazing helmet, pretty light for a traditional helmet, and comfortable. Only problem is, when I run, the helmet leans down and forward.

perfect helmet

by

I bought this helmet in 2005 and have used it ever since fit is great and weight is perfect. Have worn in for all types of fires over the years from HOT to mild. Just recently the sweatband has come off. like this helmet so much, I got a new one with defender in white for my new promotion. someday ill get new guts for the black one.

Great Lid!!

by

Great helmet. Holds up great for heat and fire, comfortable, a little heavy a first but is unnoticeable after a couple uses. Strongly reccomend it!!

Favorite Helmet So Far

by

I've had my 1044 for six years and it is still going strong. This helmet is reasonably comfortable and balanced. It does feel heavy on the head and neck after a while. This helmet is very durable and heat resistant. I have experienced degradation of turnout gear due to heat and the helmet come out untouched. I would recommend this helmet. The eagle holding the leather front on could be made better, it bends easily.

Nice!

by

Great construction, low fit, and the defenders are excellent for extrications - always there. Too close a fit for those with glasses (tested by my four-eyed buddies) - the defenders drop either on top or behind eyeglasses. Really nice helmet

Best helmet I have used

by

I have used a lot helmets and this one is my favorite by far. I have had 4 of the 1044. It sits well on my head. I am an instructor for the state and use one in live fire weekly and it is holding up really well. None of my other helmets have lasted this well. I also use one on the line and it is super comfortable and is very versatile. My favorite helmet yet and the price is good point.

Best Helmet Ever!

by

This is the second 1044 that I have used. I had to replace the first one because of department policy. We have to replace helmets after 10 years. My first 1044 lasted that entire time and is probably still good to go! This new 1044 is comfortable and still looks very traditional. The defender system is the way to go! Great helmet!

Thirty-Six Years -- Love My Cairns!

by

I started wearing my Cairns 1010 Deluxe (i think it was a Deluxe?) when promoted to captain in 1986 and have worn both 1010s and 1044s and other than a leather New Yorker or a leather Houston, I would not wear any other structural firefighting helmet out there! Went into the fire service in 1980 and it is 2022 and still, I put my 1044 on probably 8 to 10 or more times a shift often wearing it for hours without a problem!!! Compared to other helmets in the price range I would not consider any other helmet but Cairns 1010 or 1044!!!

Front heavy but looks good

by

It's a good helmet for a traditional style helmet. Although not heavy, it is front-heavy, and I spend a lot of time pushing it back. I don't know if it's because of the Defender eye shield or what, but I went back to wearing the Cairns 664, which is lighter and better balanced (I even switched from a leather shield to a Taylor's Tins shield to lighten the front, but it still kept pulling forward despite having the ratchet tight, and the chinstrap fastened correctly.

<br>Oh well, at least it looks cool on my wall.
