The PVS-7 features simple user controls, fully automated image tube protection, a built-in infrared illuminator with a momentary and continuous-on switch plus IR operation and low battery indicators displayed within the user’s field of view.
The fast (f1.12) one-power lens provides optimal low-light capabilities as well as freedom of movement for completely hands free operation.
The development of the micro-channel plate, or MCP, in the late 1960s brought on the second generation (Gen 2) in l² night vision. Second generation devices feature an improved image-intensifier tube utilizing MCP with an S-25 photocathode, resulting in a much brighter image, especially around the edges of the lens.
The MCP accelerated and multiplied electrons which provided the gain previously supplied by coupling three image intensifiers together (Gen 1). This leads to increased illumination in low ambient light environments, such as moonless nights. Also improved were image resolution and reliability.
The introduction of the MCP significantly reduced size and weight for image intensifier tubes, enabling design of smaller night vision goggles and hand-held devices. The MCP also provided much more robust operation when bright lights entered the field of view. The Gen 2 tubes used the same tri-alkali photocathode as the Gen 1 devices. This generation was implemented to reflect the change in how the light was amplified (MCP versus three-stage coupling). Light amplification is around 20,000x.
GEN II+ devices are now equipped with better optics, SUPERGEN tubes, improved resolution and better signal-to-noise ratios. These advancements in GEN II technology brought the tactical characteristics into the range of GEN III devices, which has complicated comparisons.
